Facades and power poles

When looking up you see a whole new world of open skies and unique architectural details from another time.
In the city   they are a sharp contrast to the busy life below, they add a unique charm to our peninsula community.
In the country   you don’t see that same contrast but there is a strong sense of amazing stories that could be told by the old facades quietly looking down at us. Either way, I love the detail of carefully crafted architecture built with the pride of days gone by, against the backdrop of huge skies, open to the freedom of beyond…

 

Late afternoon light

Seeing the same streetscape over and over, I’m always fascinated by how it changes so dramatically in different light conditions. Even on a grey day, or in the rain. If you look, you can see beauty in almost anything, but one of my favourite times of day is the very late afternoon. The light at this time is very warm and rich, but in just a few minutes everything changes and it will be gone forever. These paintings capture those few perfect moments.

  • 'Armidale Autumn' 2024 40x20cm float framed, oil on canvas on board. Armidale, is affectionately known as the city of churches. These beautiful grand old buildings are all grand, strikingly opulent and they all glow in the New England afternoon light. Available at Armidale Art Gallery (Summer Show 24)
  • "Travellers' Respite (on the dusty road to Tenerfield)" 2024. 40x20cm float framed, oil on canvas on board. One of Glen Innes finest hotels and a magnet for the community as a gathering place and a 'watering hole' in days gone by. Williams Club Hotel provided a welcome respite from the long dusty road trip between Tenterfield and Armidale - the stretch was favoured by the notorious Captain Thunderbolt in earlier times.   • 'Ready for the Game' oil on canvas. 2024. 31x41cm plus float timber frame. Dawn Fraser Baths is Australia's oldest public pool, and the Balmain Water Polo Club is Australia's oldest water polo club (celebrating 140 years in 2024!) 'Dawnies', one of Sydney’s most-loved assets is a special place - and the perfect home for Balmain Water Polo! 🔴 SOLD
  • 'Urban Tree #3' oil on canvas. 2024. 91x91cm. Looking up in most urban areas, the old wooden power poles you see with their dinosaur-like tangles of wires, are reminders of our growing appetite for energy. A problem. And climate change issues. Another problem and a dark side. They host birds but cast no shade. When the light catches them at the right time of day, you can see beauty in the patterns they create. Like trees... but different.   • 'Stonehenge Creek Bridge' 2024. 20x40cm float framed, oil on canvas on board. Old timber bridges like this are commonly found in the New England, remnants of the days when railways were rapidly expanding to carry wool produce to market. Available from Suzy King.
  • 'Kentucky Road' 2024. 20x40cm float framed, oil on canvas on board. Road tripping on a back road heading to the tiny village of Kentucky in the New England. Available from Suzy King.
  • 'An Urban Tree' 30x40cm, 2024 This was unfinished for a while and recently re-worked. I like looking up at those wooden poles and their squiggly wires. Like trees, but no leaves or shade, but the birds have something to sit on. And looking at this one... you can see bees (at a stretch!). Available from Suzy King.
  • Urban Tree #2 - 2024, oil on canvas, 123 x 200cm. Looking up in an urban environment, I'm always fascinated by old wooden power poles (I have painted a few now!). They are constant reminders of our growing appetite for energy and connectivity but they also host birds, have a kind of bark and no leaves so they cast no shade. There is beauty when the light hits the wires just the right way. Similar to trees... but different. 🔴 SOLD at Gosford Regional Gallery
  • And then came the Bank - oil. Framed 33 x 43cm. Way back, small farmers didn't have bank accounts but relied on the stores to get credit for the goods they bought. Then things got busy as time passed, so when the railway came through Glen Innes in 1884, the Bank came too. Often the most prominent and ornate building, this one looks onto those lovely lamps.
