Facades and power poles

When looking up you see a whole new world of open skies and unique architectural details from another time.
In the city   they are a sharp contrast to the busy life below, they add a unique charm to our peninsula community.
In the country   you don’t see that same contrast but there is a strong sense of amazing stories that could be told by the old facades quietly looking down at us. Either way, I love the detail of carefully crafted architecture built with the pride of days gone by, against the backdrop of huge skies, open to the freedom of beyond…

 

Late afternoon light

Seeing the same streetscape over and over, I’m always fascinated by how it changes so dramatically in different light conditions. Even on a grey day, or in the rain. If you look, you can see beauty in almost anything, but one of my favourite times of day is the very late afternoon. The light at this time is very warm and rich, but in just a few minutes everything changes and it will be gone forever. These paintings capture those few perfect moments.

  • "Notorious (Macquarie Harbour Tasmania)" 46x61cm, oil on canvas on board. 2024. 'Hells Gate' on the Gordon River at Strahan refers to the narrow channel entering Macquarie Harbour on the rugged West Coast. The name dates back to the early 1800’s by convicts imprisoned in the Penal Settlement on nearby Sarah Island, because they famously described their arrival through the channel as the entrance to hell! At just 120 metres wide, the channel entrance is also extremely shallow with a trecherous sandbar, and adding to the harsh conditions here are the Roaring 40s, strong westerly winds found in the Southern Hemisphere. Two headlands guard the entrance to the harbour. This lighthouse, on Entrance Island, marks the notorious passage through 'Hells Gate'.   • "Every Colour Tells a New Story" 2023. oil on canvas, framed. 33x33cm. In every town, the most ornate and impressive facades are saved for the main street. Over time, and many coats of paint, you wonder what the stories these building could tell with each new coat and a fresh start. Available from the Moree Gallery.
  • And then came the Bank - oil. Framed 33 x 43cm. Way back, small farmers didn't have bank accounts but relied on the stores to get credit for the goods they bought. Then things got busy as time passed, so when the railway came through Glen Innes in 1884, the Bank came too. Often the most prominent and ornate building, this one looks onto those lovely lamps.   • "Urban Tree" 123x200cm, oil on canvas, 2023. Like fingerprints or snowflakes, no two tangles of wires atop old power poles are the same. Looking up at these “trees”, they may be dangerous and an eyesore on the landscape but when you look at the shapes against the open sky, just when the light catches them at the right moment, you can see a beauty in the patterns they create. They can also be interpreted as a symbol of we have become with our Industrial Age technology, an overcrowded and frenzied society struggling with sustainability, energy and climate issues and an endless list of associated problems. Either way, these dinosaurs from another time, are still keeping us connected. Available from Suzy King.
  • "Urban Tree (detail)" 123x200cm, oil on canvas, 2023. The large scale of this work makes it difficult to show effectively online, so here is a detail. Available from Suzy King.
  • The Web - oil. Framed 61 x 91.5cm. -HIGHLY COMMENDED: PADDINGTON ART PRIZE 2022- Complex tangles of wire on old power poles are like fingerprints, no two are the same. An eyesore maybe, but I see beauty when the light catches them. On the flipside, they can be seen as a symbol of a struggling overcrowded & frenzied humanity with with its many issues. But I like to think of them as great shapes against luminous blue skies! Available from Suzy King.
  • 'Peninsula Sunset' 2023, oil on wood panel, 15 x 25cm. One of the best views of Balmain Peninsula! Standing on this corner, you can see the old buildings we all love on the high street and the ever growing city skyline. The trees have grown, but the streetscape here is almost identical to 100 years ago! It's perfect at sunset. FINALIST: 9x5 Landscape Prize. 🔴 SOLD
  • "Behind the Lines" 2023. oil on canvas, framed. 33x33cm. Past a green chimney, and beyond the tangles of power lines, there is clear blue sky! 🔴 SOLD
  • "Seeing Red" 2023. oil on canvas, framed. 33x33cm A bookshop since the 1969, this ornate little building was one day given a coat of red paint. It is very red! But somehow it looks like it was meant to be red and not out of place at all. Actually it would look strange in another colour. Available from the Moree Gallery.
  • "Stands Alone" 2023. oil on canvas, framed. 33x33cm. The iconic Paragon Café in Katoomba was once the most famous building in the Blue Mountains and also one of the smartest Art Deco style cocktail bars in Australia. You could buy the finest ice confections and chocolates hand-made on the premises, beautifully packaged in boxes adorned with an image of Orphan Rock, the Paragon’s logo at the time, with the fitting motto "Stands Alone".   • Corrugated - oil. Framed 43 x 43cm. The Chaff Shed next to McCrossin’s Mill at Uralla was built as cheaply as possible in the days when the times were tough. Enter the new material, corrugated iron! Galvanised corrugated iron (a revelation at the time) first arrived in Australia in the 1850s. It was easily and swiftly applied, light, compact, inexpensive, fireproof and immune from insect attack. It was sometimes known as "White Man’s Bark". Perfect! Available from the Moree Gallery.
  • Dress Circle - oil. Framed 43 x 43cm. The Gala Charity opening on 27 July 1938 saw the screening of two movies, "Stolen Heaven" and "A Bride for Henry". The magnificent Civic Theatre was a fine ornament to the district in the Art Deco style, state of the art, modern and amongst the first cinemas in the state to have full air-conditioning, much needed in a hot Scone summer!
